Ingredients

  • Walnut 3 kernels (about 10–15g)
  • Ginger 3 slices (about 10g)
  • Honey, a little (optional in soup version)

Principle

Walnut warms lung and kidney, moistens dryness, and transforms phlegm; ginger disperses cold, harmonizes stomach, and stops cough. Together they warm lung, stabilize wheezing, disperse cold, and transform phlegm.

Effects & uses

For cold-deficiency asthma in remission—shortness of breath, fatigue, aversion to cold, cold limbs, thin clear sputum; also adjunct for chronic cough and wheezing with lung–kidney dual deficiency.

Method

  1. Chew version—before bed chew walnut and ginger together and wash down with a few sips of warm water (Hong Mai formula tradition in Bencao Gangmu).
  2. Soup version—simmer walnut and ginger in one bowl of water 10 minutes after boiling; add a little honey if desired.

How to use

  • Chew version once nightly before sleep; soup version once daily, warm.

Caution

Avoid with phlegm-heat wheezing or yin deficiency with heat; do not take walnut with alcohol—especially contraindicated with hemoptysis or chronic bleeding disorders; acute asthma attack requires emergency care. Not a substitute for medication.
