Ingredients

  • Coix seed (yiyiren) 100 g
  • Mung bean 100 g

Principle

Coix strengthens the spleen, percolates damp, and eases the joints; mung bean clears heat, resolves toxins, and drains damp to reduce swelling. For damp-heat pattern: hot, red, swollen, painful joints that feel better with cool—e.g. acute gouty arthritis (syndrome differentiation required). Not for cold-damp effusion.

Effects & uses

Adjunct drink for effusion with damp-heat obstruction. Mashed dregs may be applied externally to the joint for added swelling relief. Does not replace urate-lowering drugs, antibiotics, or other cause-specific treatment.

Method

  1. Decoct in water and use the liquid.

How to use

  • Sip frequently in place of tea. Relatively cooling; do not use long-term if spleen-stomach is cold and deficient.

Caution

Contraindicated in pregnancy and in cold spleen-stomach deficiency. Not a substitute for urate-lowering, anti-infective, or other standard therapy.
