Ingredients

  • Persimmon calyx (shi di) 15g
  • Brown sugar 20g

Principle

Persimmon calyx is neutral, enters the stomach meridian, excels at descending stomach qi and stopping hiccups; Compendium of Materia Medica cites ancient use of calyx decoction alone. Brown sugar warms the middle and seasons the drink.

Effects & uses

Suitable for qi counterflow hiccups—often loud belching after overeating, distension, slight relief after eructation (syndrome differentiation required).

Method

  1. Wash persimmon calyx; decoct in water; strain.
  2. Stir in brown sugar.

How to use

  • Take warm 3 times daily.

Caution

Persimmon calyx alone has limited effect for spleen-stomach deficiency-cold or qi-deficiency hiccups—often needs other herbs. Avoid empty-stomach formulas with calyx; do not drink alcohol after taking. Not a substitute for medication.
