Ingredients

  • Perilla seed (zisu) 10g
  • Japonica rice 50g

Principle

Perilla seed is food-medicine dual use. Animal studies show anti-ulcer effects in acetic acid gastric ulcer models, possibly via inhibiting acid and pepsin, increasing mucus, and promoting epithelial growth. Perilla seed descends qi, transforms phlegm, and moistens intestines; congee is gentle.

Effects & uses

Adjunct for gastric ulcer with qi stagnation, distension, and tendency to dry stools (syndrome differentiation required).

Method

  1. Wrap perilla seed in gauze; decoct about 10 minutes and strain.
  2. Cook rice in the strained liquid to congee.

How to use

  • Eat warm once or twice daily; count rice toward staples.

Caution

Not if stools are loose (perilla seed moistens intestines). Acute bleeding or obvious heartburn per medical advice. Daily food-care only; not a substitute for medication.
