Ingredients

  • Celery 200–500g (whole plant, roots and leaves retained)
  • Red jujubes 60–120g

Principle

Celery is cool in nature, sweet and bitter in taste—clears liver heat, benefits the head and eyes, and promotes urination; red jujube tonifies middle qi, nourishes blood, and calms the spirit. Together they pacify and clear the liver, nourish blood, and quiet the heart. From Family Diet Therapy Manual, a liver-pacifying and blood-nourishing medicated diet.

Effects & uses

Suitable for headache, dizziness, insomnia, irritability, palpitations, fatigue, and poor appetite from yang hyperactivity of the liver, heart-blood insufficiency, or qi-blood deficiency; also used before exams to nourish blood, calm the heart, and soothe the spirit (syndrome differentiation required).

Method

  1. Wash the whole celery plant (keep roots and leaves); cut into 1-inch sections.
  2. Wash red jujubes; add to the pot with celery.
  3. Add adequate water and simmer into soup.

How to use

  • Take with meals; drink the soup and eat the jujubes.

Caution

Avoid if allergic to celery or jujube. Those with spleen-stomach deficiency-cold should not eat much celery. Daily dietary food care is not a substitute for medication.
