Ingredients

  • Scrophularia (xuanshen) 10g
  • Ophiopogon (maidong) 10g
  • Licorice root 6g
  • Platycodon (jiegeng) 10g

Principle

Scrophularia nourishes yin, moistens dryness, and clears toxin to benefit throat; ophiopogon moistens lung and promotes fluids; licorice drains fire and resolves toxin; platycodon disperses lung, resolves phlegm, and benefits throat. Together they nourish yin, promote fluids, clear heat, and benefit throat.

Effects & uses

Suitable for yin-deficiency lung-dryness pharyngitis with dry painful throat unrelieved by drinking, worse afternoon or night, sticky hard-to-expectorate phlegm; reference for voice users (syndrome differentiation required).

Method

  1. Rinse the four herbs; decoct in water—high heat to boil, then low heat 15–20 minutes; strain.

How to use

  • Frequent warm tea; may re-steep until flavor fades.

Caution

Use cautiously with spleen-stomach deficiency-cold. Not a substitute for medication.
