Ingredients

  • Yam 30g
  • Ophiopogon 15g
  • Soft-shelled turtle 1 (about 500g)
  • Cooking wine and salt to taste

Principle

Yam tonifies spleen and kidney; ophiopogon nourishes yin and generates fluids; turtle nourishes yin, cools blood, and softens hardness. The soup nourishes yin and cools blood, supplements liver and kidney—suited to long-standing cirrhosis with general debility and enlarged liver-spleen.

Effects & uses

Suitable for cirrhosis with sore weak lower back and knees, dry mouth with red tongue, fatigue, night sweats, and liver-spleen enlargement (syndrome differentiation required).

Method

  1. Clean turtle; remove entrails.
  2. Simmer with yam and ophiopogon in about 1000 mL water.
  3. Add a little wine and salt; stew until very tender.

How to use

  • Eat meat and drink soup with meals.

Caution

Not suitable for spleen-stomach deficiency-cold or loose stools. Use with caution in hepatic encephalopathy (turtle is high in protein). Strict alcohol abstinence. Daily dietary food care is not a substitute for medication.
